It’s been ten days since my post about the upcoming Strava IPO and my wondering about the inevitable Enshittification of the platform. 10! days. Today we get the news (shared by Ray Maker on his DCRainmaker blog) that Strava is suing Garmin:
Strava has sued Garmin, an act that I very much did not have on my bingo card for 2025. In doing so, they are demanding that Garmin cease selling effectively all of their fitness/outdoor watches, as well as cycling computers. Additionally, they’re asking for a bunch of feature removals on Garmin Connect.
Classic pre-IPO move to shore up their assets and piss off their customers who by now have nowhere else to go. Strava believes that no bad publicity or user-hostile action will have any affect on their user numbers and/or revenue as they climbed to the top of the heap and have no real competition. I mean, the entire trail running industry is relying on this platform by now. Even UTMB just announced a deeper partnership with them.
Some shit right there, I say.
