Baumgartner, Red Bull Skydiver, Dead at 56

The extreme sports pioneer Felix Baumgartner, famed for a record-breaking 2012 skydive from the edge of space, has died in a paragliding accident in central Italy, local police said.

I was glued to the screen when he made that jump out of space. My family sat with me watching him fall and land safely in that massive net they set up. I actually don’t know how I would’ve explained this to my young kids if he died that day right in front of our eyes. This sort of extreme sport spectacles feel calculated and safe, until they aren’t. Rest in peace to an adventurer who pushed the boundaries and defined a moment in time like few of them before.
