Ultra Running Magazine updates their Old School Ultras race calendar for 2025. Included are a few new additions since they launched their 2024 list last year:
Initially launched with these 10 in 2024:
- Hurt 100, Hawaii
- Mountain Mist 50K Trail Run, Alabama
- Chuckanut 50k, Washington
- Diez Vista 50K, British Columbia, Canada
- Strolling Jim 40 Mile Run, Tennessee
- Miwok 100K, California
- Cascade Crest 100 Mile, Washington
- Tamalpa Headlands 50K, California
- JFK 50 Mile, Maryland
- Pine Mt. Trail Run, Georgia
The newly added races for 2025 are:
A few observations:
- There’s no race in Colorado so far is on that list, which surprises me a bit.
- Three of the 19 are from Washington State, highlighting the long history of trail running in my home state.
- Twelve of them are from the western side of the country, showing how trail running grew out from Auburn, California.
- Some of these old school logos look truly amazing. Many look like they were created before the computer, some of them might have actually been. Most would look great on a race t-shirt.
- You can see the inspiration for these events were the first endurance races like Western States: These events often have the distance in the name, making the achievement to run that distance the main focus for participating.
