The Two Big American Lotteries

For folks playing the game this is not news, but I still thought it was worth mentioning:
Both the Hardrock 100 and the Western States lottery are currently accepting entries. The draws happen (as always) on the first Saturday in December, which in 2024 is December 7th. Yes, both lottery draws happen on the same day. Why? I don’t know, but clearly this is the one day of the year when most American runners will skip their long run on Saturday morning and instead will be glued into one, or both of the livestreams.

  • Enter the Hardrock lottery on UltraSignup. The entry fee for 2025 is $466 (including platform fees). As of this writing there are 2,986 applicants for the ~150 spots.
  • For the Western States lottery process visit their custom-built web portal. The entry fee for 2025 is $475 + the online fee, this should bring the total over $500, which might be a first for a 100 mile trail race.
