If Cross-country Goes Back to the Olympics, What Happens to Trail Running?

Cross-country running and cyclocross have a good chance of being added to the 2030 winter Games in France, Sebastian Coe has predicted, as part of what could be the biggest overhaul of the Olympics in a generation.

Cross Country has previously been part of the Olympics, way back in 1912 – 1924 but could return alongside cyclocross. Two interesting points to this story:

• If cross country does return it would be added to the winter games, not the Summer games. This would be a fascinating and pretty smart move. The Summer Olympics are ballooning with tons of already confusing number of sports. The Winter Olympics are (still) smaller and are in danger of losing reliable snow in the mountains. Moving some sports that might not be classic ‘snow and ice’ sports to the Winter Olympics could be a great way to ensure that the Winter Olympics have enough sports in the future.
• If cross country is added as a sport how would trail running make a case for itself to be different enough? Especially if Salomon’s idea of trail running in the Olympics would essentially be a blown up (longer) cross country event?
