Fabrice Perrin, UTMB Chief of Sport, responds on Instagram and LinkedIn to the latest calls against a so called ‘monopoly’ in our sport:
“Monopoly”? The numbers say otherwise.
There are 20,000 to 25,000 trail races worldwide.
One group organizes around 50 of them—that’s 0.1 to 0.5% of the market.
Even in ultras, the main trend is growth, fueled by new races, not just acquisitions.
There’s a lot more to Fabrice’s post than merely pointing out the actual numbers. Worth reading the whole post to get a sense of how UTMB sees itself fitting into the larger ecosystem of trail races with smaller ‘village races’ and the big, structured ones that are increasingly owned and operated by UTMB.
