10,566 runners participated in the seven races: TDS, MCC, ETC, PTL, OCC, CCC, UTMB in 2026. I did not include the YCC youth races in this calculation. That’s about a 2% reduction in field size, which feels like a rounding error and don’t think indicates a trend.
The more interesting numbers to compare are the individual races. It seems UTMB really reshuffled the number of runners they allowed in several of the races. Here are the starters for each of the race compared with previous years:

202420252026
UTMB2,7612,4922,407
CCC2,2702,1271,974
OCC1,7641,5681,945
TDS1,8741,9341,290
MCC1,1471,1981,456
ECC1,2161,3321371
PTL*120121123

*PTL show numbers of teams.

TDS saw a huge drop in starter numbers, and a smaller drop for CCC. These numbers which were redistributed to MCC, OCC, ETC – the shorter distances. Is this a fluke, a response to the fairly high DNF rate in the longer distances, or UTMB trying to reduce the number of runners on the trails for sustainability purposes, I don’t know.

Here’s the gender breakdown for the 2026
