UTMB Cancels Kaçkar 100K Due to Heavy Snowfall

From their official statement on the website:

After thorough evaluation, we have made the very difficult decision to cancel the Kaçkar 100K race. We explored every possible alternative to preserve it, and while our wish was to share with you the highest and wildest peaks of the Kaçkar Mountains, the recent heavy snowfalls at high altitudes have created avalanche risks that make it impossible to guarantee a safe race in those areas.

Your safety has always been and will always remain our top priority. Every decision we make is guided by our commitment to ensuring that each of you reaches the finish line safe and sound.

Word on the street (Reddit) is that this race previously was held earlier in the season – during a time when these mountains had more predictable weather. It has since been moved – one would assume due to the previous date being too close to the UTMB Finals – and well… the mountains don’t play, as they say.
