This tragic news has been all over my German news feeds this past 24 hours. Here’s Sean Kearns reporting for the BBC:
Double Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier has died after a mountaineering accident in Pakistan.
The 31-year-old German was caught in a rockfall during an expedition in the Karakoram mountains on Monday.
Her climbing partner, Marina Eva, called emergency services after the accident, which occurred at about 5,700 metres (18,700 feet) altitude.
Thomas Huber, who was with her on expedition in Pakistan wrote on Instagram:
“Laura, your tent is empty now, but your energy shines through those mountains for eternity.”
As tragic as this is, I share Thomas’s sentiment: “she lived her dream until the very last second, and that is an example for us all”.
